The Public Sculptures of London

UPDATED 20160720 09:44:51

London is full of public sculptures. From memorials to Britain's kings and queens, to the heroes of wars and social struggles, and countless symbolic figures representing virtues, it is difficult to walk for any length of time in central London without coming face to face with one of the sculpted faces of the past. But who are the figures represented in these sculptures and why are they there? On this course we will visit five different locations in London, each filled with public sculptures. We will learn who the sculptures depict, who made them and why they are where they are, all in the company of Dr Michael Paraskos, a judge on the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture, an annual award given by the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association for the best new public sculpture in Britain. As well as sculptures from the seventeenth century through to the twentieth century, we will discover examples of current public sculpture, including the controversial Fourth Plinth sculptures in Trafalgar Square, and we will learn how the types of people commemorated in this most public of art forms has changed over the centuries.
