Qigong exercises form a vital part of 'yang sheng' (health cultivation) in Chinese. The gentle movements and standing postures aid relaxation by concentrating and calming the mind, relieving mental and physical tension and restoring 'qi' or vital energy. The aim of Chinese medicine is to return the body to a state of balance. Qigong exercises work on different organs (liver, heart, spleen, lung and kidney) and fundamental substances (qi, blood, essence) to create a harmony of yin and yang.
