Can't find the perfect hat or who have something difficult to match? Time to look at the sunny weather and make that special hat to shade your eyes or enhance a spring or summer outfit. On this course you will look at how to start and create your own hat personalised to your own taste and specifications.Traditional and contemporary millinery techniques will be used to make soft and structured hats cut from flat patterns, covered buckram shapes or pre-blocked hat shapes. The classes will cover the construction and styling of hats using a range of millinery materials including felt, fabric, feathers, faux fur and straw. Including an introduction to a range of decorative techniques and methods of professionally finishing hats.

Entry requirements

Learners will decide on a design and colour scheme. You will need to purchase quantities of specialist materials and trimmings to embellish and complete your headwear. You can also bring anything that you would like incorporate into your design - perhaps a vintage broach, jewellery or buttons that you love and want to re-use. Learners will also need a basic sewing kit including paper and fabric scissors, hand sewing needles of various sizes, plastic or glass headed pins, matching sewing thread, tailor's chalk, tape measure, apron, notepaper and pencil.Learners will be provided with a materials list before the start of the course which will include contact details of millinery suppliers.
