This course will encourage a personal approach to creating abstract images. Students will consider the origins of abstract art and the wide variety of approaches that have evolved. There will be a strong emphasis on the use of experimental methods, and how materials, concepts and symbols contribute to making abstract work. The course will provide a stimulating workshop environment for anyone looking to develop their drawing and painting skills., , By the end of this course you should be able to:, Select and use a range of materials and methods., Recognise a variety of abstract styles., Make experimental abstract studies., Produce abstract drawings and paintings., Work to health and safety guidelines. Students who have completed a beginners art course or have some experience. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound, and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Some of our centres have their own 'shops' where you are able to buy materials at competitive prices. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
