Textiles - Embroidery Sampler

During this course, you will learn about materials and techniques of embroidery and will aim to produce your own sampler, based on an original or traditional design. You will look at a variety of work and designs by leading artist embroiders, as well as some much older samplers and embroidery work, stitched over the last 1000 years and will use these sources as inspiration for original designs, motifs and colour work. You will learn how to make up your own embroidery pattern and will be guided in how to transfer this to fabric. You will then use a variety of embroidery techniques to complete your work, There will be the opportunity for students to see some remarkable examples of English needlework on a visit to the exhibition, Opus Anglicanum: Masterpieces of English Medieval Embroidery, at the Victoria and Albert Museum., By the end of this course you should be able to:, Describe and explain the techniques of embroidery work, Generate an original embroidery design, Design and plan a sampler, incorporating some or all of: lettering; border designs; spot motifs, Produce a range of embroidery stitches including some or all of: satin; seed; stem; long and short; back; lazy daisy; French knots; bullion bars., Produce a complete embroidered sampler, Suitable for Beginners who would like to learn the basic skills to make a Patchwork Quilt. , It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. For the first session, you will need squared paper and coloured pencils. , You will also need a piece of even weave, linen or cotton fabric and an embroidery hoop or frame to fit; a selection of stranded cotton threads and embroidery needles (your tutor will advise you during the first session). A basic sewing kit will be useful throughout the course.
