Art History - Surrealism

Surrealism, The course will give an overview of the key concepts and artists relating to Surrealism in the visual arts. It will include the influence of the Dada movement and explore the impact of the theories of the psychologist Sigmund Freud: dreams versus reality, the conscious (the ego) and the unconscious. Surrealist techniques will also be examined in relation to specific artists. Artists examined will include: Max Ernst, René Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, Man Ray, Leonora Carrington, Méret Oppenheim and Salvador Dali., , Outcomes, , By the end of the course students will be able to….., , , • Demonstrate a knowledge of different concepts relating to Surrealism, , • Identify specific concepts relevant to individual Surrealist artists, , • Recognise the influence of specific artists within art history, , • Develop and justify their point of view, , • Take part in discussion with other students, The absolute beginner and the more experienced artist, to encourage the shared experience of art.
