Economics A2

UPDATED 20160806 16:37:23

The course does not follow on directory from any subjects you took at GCSE. A good foundation in English and Maths, and appreciation of the skills taught in History, Religious Studies or Geography, will help students start soundly on the way to economic enlightenment. Students will look to develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand and analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions. They will also build upon their quantitative skills and appreciate that, when evaluating, quantitative evidence is important. WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE? Through this course students will be encouraged to develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories, through critical consideration of current economic issues, to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world events. At A2, students will study the impact of globalisation on UK economic performance and the effect of European Union memberships and economic policy on the UK economy. WHAT KIND OF STUDENT IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? Ideally you should have a grade B in English or a Humanities subject and a grade B in Maths (any exceptions will be individually considered). WHAT IS THE COURSE CONTENT AND HOW IS IT ASSESSED? The course is divided into 4 modules at A2, with an additional fifth paper assessing the overall understanding of the course. All papers are externally assessed. At A2 there are 2 data response questions, from which students choose one on each paper. This is followed in each case by three essay questions, from which students choose one. The 5th paper is multiple-choice followed by Case Study questions assessing all of the previous papers. Each of the 3 papers at A2 contribute 33.33% of the overall A2 grade.
