Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is one of the towering figures in Western art. His work, perhaps more than that of any other artist, conveys an almost indefinable sense of human experience and depth of feeling, which derives from a magical combination of Dutch realism, Italian theatrical expression and innovative use of light, together with a unique handling of paint, which set the scene for later generations of artists. This three-hour course will trace the origins and development of Rembrandt's art through his paintings, drawings and prints, and place him in the context of other artists working at the time. The lectures will be fully illustrated with slides.
