In May 1942, the British launched, the biggest amphibious operation undertaken since the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. Its objective: the capture of the strategic naval base at Diego Suarez on Madagascar. Controversially this was an operation against a former ally and a non-belligerent nation. Was the action a success? Was it even necessary? Churchill thought so, but do you?
