Autism Spectrum Awareness

UPDATED 20160701 11:13:05

4CAF6961A - Autism Spectrum Awareness 'A spectrum of provision for a spectrum of need' (Autism Working Group 2002: 16). This statement sums up the complexity of Autistic Spectrum conditions (ASC) and the diverse nature of those who are included within this term. It can also be argued that there is a spectrum of strengths which all too easily can be overshadowed by behaviour that non autistic individuals consider challenging. This course will provide an overview and awareness of ASC theories, common presentations within individuals and approaches to proactive support. As soon as we meet a person we make judgements about them. From their facial expression, tone of voice and body language, we pick up social cues and can generally tell how that person might be feeling and be able to respond accordingly. People who are on the autistic spectrum can find this everyday occurrence difficult and for some individuals an impossibility. On this course we will explore how ASC can impact on an individual's social perception, identifying existing ASC theories and through this provide opportunities to develop approaches to proactive support
