If you are new to watercolour, this course will help you to build your skills and confidence. You will be guided through a series of exercises designed to develop your knowledge and skills in handling the medium of watercolour paint and pencils including colour mixing, washes, layer colour and masking out.

The tutor will demonstrate these techniques and will be on hand to offer help and advice, allowing you to explore and experiment with the various media and develop your confidence. You will make drawings and paintings of people, animals, landscapes, and still life objects, as well as subjects of your own invention. Reference will be made to the work of various established artists, in order to inform and inspire your work. Artists' Quality Watercolour paints in tubes or pans, in the following four basic colours: 1. Lemon Yellow. 2. Cobalt Blue or Ultramarine Blue. 3. Permanent Rose. 4. Burnt Sienna. 5. One or two good quality large watercolour brushes (round and/or flat). 6. Water-soluble coloured pencils. 7. Two sheets of watercolour paper (A4 or A3). 8. Graphite pencils (2B and 6B) and a plastic eraser. Gouache: Permanent White, plus colours of your choice Supply of good quality watercolour paper Masking tape Small sketch book or note book An apron or old shirt, to protect clothing Your tutor will let you know if you need any further materials.
