UPDATED 20160623 10:31:09

Psychology Psychology is the science of human and animal behaviour. It explores our biological basis in evolution, the nervous system and cognition and the study of social factors which affect the behaviour of individuals and of groups. Why we do the things we do and how/why we interact with others. It is grounded in systematic empirical research as well as in theory and so includes a focus of method of research and statistical analysis. Students also explore how psychologists use evidence derived from research to contribute to debates on matters such as aging, crime, education, employment, forensic science, mental health, relationships and much more. On this fascinating journey students gain knowledge and understanding of these different areas of psychology, develop valuable analytical and communication skills and enhance their ability to work both independently and collaboratively. A good psychology student is both numerate and literate. These are intellectual and practical skills which are potentially relevant to a wide range of occupations in our complex technological society. English Literature English Literature combines theoretical study of different genres from poetry to drama to fiction. The aim of this intellectually challenging course is to develop a sophisticated understanding and interpretation of the relationship between the text and its historical and cultural context. Texts are drawn from broad historical periods and cultural settings. The course will develop advanced and progressive evaluative skills of current critical arguments through lectures, seminars, collaborative work and independent study. Year one will start with interdisciplinary and thematic textual analysis through an introduction to narrative, poetry and literary theory such as Marxism and Feminism. Year two will include a selection of more specialised modules such as Shakespeare, the 18th century novel, Victorian and contemporary literature as well as a dissertation.
