On this course you will study the impact that science and technology has on your everyday life. You will gain an understanding of how science may affect your own and others' lives life. You will develop the skill of making sense of science as it is reported in the media and how to present and interpret scientific information yourself. Each Unit comprises a variety of topics. These include, in Biology, modules studying how our genes contribute to what kind of people we are, the diversity of life on earth and keeping healthy. In Chemistry, the topics of global air quality, the materials we use in everyday life and the risks and benefits of the chemicals that we use are covered. In Physics, topics include the earth's place in the Universe, radiation and life and a detailed assessment of sustainable energy and its possible impact on our future. Alongside scientific knowledge and interpretation, you will develop techniques of working with others and applying skills in numeracy and information technology to assist with problem solving. The practical coursework will test a range of practical skills such as experimental design, collecting and analysing data and interpreting the results. Core science will offer you the chance to develop the scientific literacy needed to enable you to be an active and informed citizen in a modern democratic society where science and technology play key roles in shaping our lives. You will learn to appreciate what science has to say about people, the environment and the Universe.
