In year 1; you will explore the ways in which people communicate with others and what influences our language choices in different contexts. You will learn how to use a variety of linguistic terminology to analyse text and speech produced for a variety of different situations and purposes- within this analysis you will explore what this tells us with regards to the social background and influences on the producer such as age; gender and ethnicity.In year 2; you will explore how children acquire language; specifically how they acquire spoken and written language as well as how reading is developed. Within this we will look at the various different theories of how this is achieved. We will also delve into the history of the English language looking at how it has; and continues to; change over time. We will focus on areas such as dialect; power and gender as well as exploring some of the major varieties of English such as those used in America; Australia; India and by ethnic groups within Britain itself.
