What topics will I study? AQA 7192/1 Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods AQA 7192/2 Paper 2: Families and Households, The Mass Media AQA 7192/3 Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods What insights into contemporary UK society will I have by the end of the course? An understanding of sociological explanations of the role and functions of the education system. An understanding of differential educational achievement by social class, gender and ethnicity and explanations for these trends. An understanding of relationships and processes within schools. An understanding of the significance of educational policies, including the impact of globalisation. You will also be investigating sociological research methods and how these can be applied to the study of education considering a range of methodological issues including ethical concerns. You will also be examining a range of sociological theories and the concepts of modernity and post-modernity in relation to these. The debate about whether Sociology can be a science will also be examined, alongside debates about value freedom. The relationship between theory and methods and between Sociology and social policy will also be examined. An understanding of sociological explanations of the relationship of the family to the social structure and social change (with particular reference to the economy and state policies), including patterns of marriage, childbearing etc. An understanding of sociological explanations of gender roles and power relations within the family and the changing nature of childhood. You will also be investigating demographic trends including the ageing population and migration.
