Get Ready for GCSE Maths

Is this the right course for me? Yes, if you hope to enroll on a GCSE maths course in Sept 2016 and have a good basic understanding of Maths. It may be some time since you studied maths and you would like to brush up on your skills and knowledge in preparation for the one-year GCSE maths course. The course will also include an assessment of your skills and you will be given advice regarding your readiness to succeed at GCSE. What will I learn? Numbers: Calculate whole numbers and decimals using addition, subtraction, long multiplication and long division. Find equivalent fractions and simplify fractions. Add and subtract fractions and find fractions of an amount. Algebra: Simplify expressions. Expand and simplify brackets. Substitute numbers for letters in formulae and evaluate. Shape/ measure: Calculate angles on a straight line and angles around a point. Calculate the length of sides in a right-angled triangle. Calculate using perimeter, area and volume. Data: Read and represent data as pictograms and pie charts. Recognize types of correlation. Find averages. How will I learn? Classroom activities will include individual and small group work using games, activities, tasks, online learning resources and teacher-led activities. You will need to do approximately an hour of homework each week. What do I need to bring to the classes? Please bring a pen, a pencil, a ring binder, a ruler, a compass, a protractor and a calculator (CASIO fx-85GT PLUS). What can I do to prepare for the course?
