This course is designed to contribute towards the subject specific skills, knowledge and understanding required by ESOL teachers who work or want to work in further, adult and community education, work-based learning and the voluntary sector. It aims to enable candidates to adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching, reflect on experience, develop communication and interpersonal skills and also an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities. It is suitable for teachers who already hold the full level 5 generic teaching qualification (PGCE/Cert Ed/DTLLS) or are working towards this. Course Content: How language and literacy are learned Concepts of language variety and change How language is utilised in power relations The importance of selecting fair and effective assessment methods How personal, social and cultural factors influence literacy and ESOL learners? literacy and language use How to use specialist knowledge and resources in planning for teaching and learning Ways of evaluating own teaching practice and observations Assessment consists of 4 observations of teaching, assignments and completion of a reflective journal and teaching practice log. The total number of QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) credits to achieve the award is 45.
