AS/A Level Physical Education

This course is designed for well-motivated students who have an interest in expanding their knowledge in all aspects of sport. Students may progress to degree courses at university or for those who wish to go into employment. It provides an understanding for not only the importance of exercise and activity to their personal, social and mental health and well-being; but also for improving their sports performance.AS Level: Unit 1 (60%) Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will be examined :-Section A - will require candidates to answer questions on applied physiology, skill acquisition and opportunities for participation.Section B - will examine the application of theoretical knowledge to a practical situation.AS Level: Unit 2 (40%) Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted roles/sCandidates are assessed on their ability to perform, analyse and evaluate the execution of core skills/techniques in isolation and a structured practice within 2 of the adopted roles (performer/official/leader).A2 Level: Unit 3 (60%) Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport.Candidates will be examined on:-Section A - looks at how the application of physiological factors can optimise performance.Section B - looks at how the application of psychological knowledge can optimise performance.Section C - evaluates contemporary influences in sport and their impact on the performer.A2 Level: Unit 4 (40%) Optimising practical performance in a competitive situationCandidates are assessed on their ability to perform, analyse and evaluate their own performance of the core skills/techniques in a competitive situation in one of the three adopted roles (performer/official/leader). Then using their knowledge and understanding identify their weaknesses; suggest the causes of these weaknesses and appropriate corrective measures.
