This course is designed for students with an interest in how the cinema has emerged on both an entertainment and a cultural level. As you will be looking at (or more accurately reading) different films an inquisitive and analytical mind would be useful. You should also be able to communicate your thoughts clearly both in your written work and during group discussions. This subject combines well with a variety of other AS level subjects such as English, Sociology, and Psychology, or vocational courses in Media, Art & Photography or Performing Arts. You will be increasingly aware of how films are constructed and the underlying messages which exist within them. These skills will also transfer to other mediums such as television and photography. You will also become familiar with the language of film and how different theorists can read the same film from alternative viewpoints. For those considering a media or film related degree this introduction may be invaluable. The way you watch films may never be the same again!
