Gilding - Introduction

This course is a general introduction to frame restoration including recreating missing ornaments and gilding. The teaching is based on personal projects (you will work on your damaged frame(s)).The first session will focus on how to repair a damaged antique frame and prepare the surface before re-gilding. You will learn how to: - Clean an antique gilded frame - Remove/strip non-original paint - Make gesso - Create moulds to replace damaged/missing ornaments During the second session, you will be introduced to the technique of oil gilding using genuine gold leaf and metal leaf. You will be shown methods to tone and distress new gold to recreate patina to match original. You will also learn to make bole and have the opportunity to try water gilding using bole.

Name: Gilding - Introduction Qualification title: Non regulated Community Learning provision, Crafts, Creative Arts and Design Qualification type: Assessment You will need to bring your own frame(s) to restore in class: antique gilded frames with damaged ornaments, 19th or older, covered in dirt and grime, or with non-original paint. If you're in doubt as to what to bring, please contact the tutor for advice. You will need to bring the following material to the class: - Roll of cotton wool - Selection of paint brushes including small (1 or 0) round pointed for watercolour or gouache, selection of small flat artist brushes (cheap wooden handle natural bristle) - Old tooth brush (if you have any) - 2 jars for making gesso and bole - Scalpel - Note pad Money will be collected by the tutor at the start of the first session including: - for general class materials (including impression putty, modelling clay, bole,.): £10 - for gold leaf : around £25 / book of 25 leaves or around £1 / leaf Awarding Generic award - no awarding body Created 20160519 13:59:14 Updated 20160519 13:59:14
