This is an introductory course for students with an interest in the subject. It is particularly appealing to adults and traditionally it is offered as part of many adult college programmes. It is popular because its subject matter is complex and fascinating. Modern Psychology focuses mainly on human behaviour but historically much of psychological theory is based upon early studies of animals. So truly psychology is the study of both human and animal behaviour. This particular course is based on ten major topic areas, which together develop a foundation of psychological knowledge, which is tested by coursework completed through the year and an end examination. Subjects which are covered include human development, brain systems, memory and perceptual processes, learning and social psychology e.g. why we obey and conform.
