Geography AS Level. The study of Geography is a way to achieving a better understanding of our complex and rapidly changing world. It considers the way we look after and use our planet and the things that impact on people's lives in different parts of the world. During the course you will look at hazards such as volcanoes and earthquakes around the world. We examine the processes which form these hazards, why some hazards become disasters and the ways in which the risks can be managed. We also study the changing coastline, again using our knowledge of the processes acting upon the coast to help us understand complex management decisions. The human geography elements will comprise an understanding of globalization processes and the changing nature of the world superpowers as well as the way in which the world is organised and governed by the United Nations and through global co-operation. We will look at how we measure development, why some countries are less developed and the extent to which they may be able to catch-up. We will also examine population issues such as migration and population change and the political impacts raised for different countries both now and into the future. Geography is also concerned with the collecting of new knowledge through fieldwork and there will be an expectation that you take part in fieldwork in order to reinforce the knowledge learnt in class. Based partly upon this fieldwork, there will be the opportunity to complete a piece of coursework. ASMGEO
