The Victorian era was charged with creativity across the arts. Some of the world's greatest authors emerged in English literature at this time. Since that period, literary style and language have changed, and the world in which the Victorians wrote set their stories has passed away, which means it is sometimes daunting to approach reading Victorian classic literature alone. This course aims to make reading Victorian fiction accessible and exciting. Reading selected extracts from a different classic work each week this course will discuss and appraise the work of a series of writers. Authors to be considered will include: Anthony Trollope, Emily Brontë, John Ruskin, Mary Braddon, Thomas Hardy, Frances Hodgson Burnett.
