D&T Product Design

UPDATED 20160420 14:50:29

The specification has been designed to: - Encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology. - Develop candidates' capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. Scheme of Assessment Y12 forms 50% of the assessment weighting of the full A level. AO1 Candidates should demonstrate specific knowledge and understanding and be able to apply that knowledge and understanding in combination with appropriate skills in their designing; and should communicate ideas and outcomes and demonstrate strategies for evaluation. AO2 Candidates should be able to demonstrate and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of relevant materials, processes and techniques, and use materials and equipment to produce suitable and appropriate outcomes; and should communicate ideas and outcomes and demonstrate strategies for evaluation. Specification Units - Y12 Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application 2-hour written paper 50% of Y12 or 25% of Y13 Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making Coursework - approximately 50 hours - 50% of Y12 or 25% of Y13 This unit is the AS Centre Assessed Component. Each student will be expected to compile an e-portfolio of design and realisation work which will reflect their capabilities and skills in designing and manufacturing products aimed at specific 'markets'. Much of the research and development stages of the folio work will be based in homework in the early parts of the project - with the practical activities of lessons designed to deliver specific knowledge of the materials and processes involved. As the year progresses the emphasis shifts so that the majority of the 'project work' will be based in school and the examination preparation will be based in homework.
