if you have enjoyed films or books about the ancient world and you are curious to understand more about the social life of the Greeks and Romans, Classical Civilisation will give you the opportunity to study their cultures and the great works of literature they have given us as part of our heritage. There is no foreign language content to the course and you do not need to have studied Classical Civilisation before to make a success of A level. The course involves the study of a wide range of literature from Greece and Rome, including epic poetry, drama - both comedy and tragedy - law court speeches, letters and historical accounts. There is a strong focus on Greek mythology and students are expected to understand the cultural and social background that gave rise to the literature. Visits relevant to the course, such as theatre trips and study days, are made and students are expected to undertake a programme of wider research including reading and watching recommended television series and documentaries. Assessment and Examinations. The awarding body is AQA and the course title is Classical Civilisation. The AS specification involves the study of two modules each worth 50% of the total or 25% of the whole A level. Students continuing to study to A2, study two further modules each worth 25%. There is no coursework element in this specification. Modules for study are as follows: AS level The Lives of Greek and Roman Women A study of freeborn women in Classical Athens and of Roman women in the late Republic and early Empire. You will learn about them through law court speeches, letters, historical accounts and a comedy by Aristophanes. Homer's Iliad A critical study of selected books of the Iliad, Homer's epic poem which tells the story of an episode from the last year of the Trojan War. Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus, Hector and Paris are some of the famous heroes of the Iliad and you will also read about the exploits of the Olympian gods.
