This is an exciting new course in our Tunbridge Wells centre covering the Elizabethan period and its ornaments. It combines study of the Elizabethan era with the realisation of your own piece or ornament relating to textiles and silversmith ornaments., This course will allow you to explore some of the inspirations from the Elizabethan ornamentation and techniques through examination of contemporary art, textiles, jewellery, architecture and garden design with special reference to the Hardwick Hall and its collections., The textile element of the course will introduce you to the technique of blackwork embroidery - so fashionable during the early modern period - and provide the opportunity for you to research and , produce your own original piece of textile art., There will be four sessions dedicated to History, two sessions for the realisation of a blackwork design and and five lessons with the Silversmith tutor who will lead you through the realisation of your own piece of Elisabethan jewellery., History Content:, - Examination of the practical application of design to art, textiles, jewellery, architecture and garden design of the period, - Investigation into the evidence of symbolism - both religious and secular - in Elizabethan art and ornament, - Debate over the contribution made to fashion, art, design by the expansion of British Empire., - Assessment of the personal influence of the monarch on contemporary design, Textile Content, - Sketch ideas (from books, samples, reference material) to produce original blackwork design (or copy an existing one, on a squared papaer grid. Practise and compare blackwork embroidery stitch techniques., Silversmith Content, -Design and make a pendant inspired by the jewellery traditions of the Elizabethan age. Using a variety of techniques and hand tools, studnets will work in copper, silver with the option of gemstones and pearls, to make their piece., , , , ,
