After an introduction to the context of the he course is a field trip to Tonbridge Castle including a walk along part of the outer perimeter. Students will identify and describe features from the different periods of the castle (Norman motte and bailey, Early English stonework) and will be able to explain when the different parts of the castle were built, how and why they were built as they were, and what happened when the defences were put to the test., This will be of interest to anybody interested in history, particularly that of the late medieval, Wars of the Roses period.

Some handouts will be provided; students should bring pencils for note taking. The walk takes place around Tonbridge Castle. Climbing will be optional but students should be equipped appropriately for an outdoors visit in the forecast weather conditions.
