Calligraphy and Lettering - Beginners

This course will give you an introduction into calligraphy., By the end of the course you should be able to:, - Set up your workspace efficiently, - Use a dip pen correctly, - Write the western alphabet in one of the basic calligraphic hands, - Space the letters evenly in your projects, - Rule up correct guidelines for your projects (e.g. a bookmark / label / card /, small concertina book / a fridge magnet,.. ), - Write with ink and/or watercolour in your dip pen, on at least 2 different papers, - Use good margins around your text, - Work to relevant health and safety guidelines, , Some practice between sessions is recommended in order to make continuous progress., For complete beginners and for students with a little experience who have not yet learned the 4 basic hands. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.

Entry requirements

Students are responsible for the cost of their own equipment and materials. If you are a new student and have no materials, please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring the following to the first session: 2 pencils, 2 rubber bands, a sharpener, a soft rubber that does not smudge, a plastic ruler, masking tape (1 - 1 ¼ wide), 2 paper clips, scissors, a ballpoint pen. During the first session, your tutor will explain what equipment and materials you will need to make a start in calligraphy. If you wish, you can buy your first calligraphy pen and paper from the tutor for approximately £6. If you have done some calligraphy before, please bring your usual equipment to the first session.
