This Silversmithing course encourages working with hand tools to design and construct a range of metal objects as well as the manipulation of metals (gold, silver and copper etc.). There will be a choice of 2 basic projects including their processes during this course. This includes: the use of tools and forges, the introduction to soldering and safety in workshops, finishing techniques and the use of polishing spindle and flexidrive motor. , Items, if made in silver, can be hallmarked by the London Assay Office. , By the end of the course you will be able to manipulate the four elements that will help create a finished piece of work including:, Cutting - the use of piercing saw and files,, Shaping - the use of tools to manipulate the material into the desired form/shape,, Joining - use solder to join silver together,, Finishing - the use of emery papers and polishing compounds to create a high finish on objects,, and be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines., You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop personal skills.

Entry requirements

Please bring to the first session a protective overall or apron and notebook and pen. Later on in the course a few basic tools can be obtained. You can buy silver direct from suppliers after the first week; the tutor will help you to start doing this as there are a number of suppliers you can use. Details will be discussed at the first session or if necessary your tutor will send a list a week before the course starts., A small contribution towards emery cloths is payable each term. Silver, piercing blades and silver solder can be purchased in class.
