This 'Criminal Law - The Basics' course in Sittingbourne is a one day introduction to criminal law. This course will explain how innocence or guilt is determined by a judge and jury by using one of the most famous case studies of the last century - Ruth Ellis, the last woman in England to be hanged. , , In 1955, Ruth Ellis was hanged for the murder of her lover after shooting and killing him in front of witnesses. Ruth was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. This course will examine the law as it stands today and students will apply that law to the case study to determine whether Ruth was guilty of murder, manslaughter or whether she had such a strong defence that guilt could not be established. , , Students will act as judge and jury and will have deliberations in a jury style setting to consider the evidence. They will then return as judges to decide upon the sentence., , There will be a short video about the trial and lots of group discussion., , *N.B.
