This course will prepare you for employment in the Construction industry. Topics covered include: How the Construction industry operates and communicates, How buildings are built and the role of a Carpenter, How to make the various joints used in carpentry, Using Woodworking hand tools, and Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery power tools. The course is made up of the following mandatory units. All units include practical, hands-on activities, studied in our on-site workshops and construction classrooms: Building Methods - how buildings are built and the role you as a carpenter would play; Wood working joints - how to make the various joints used in carpentry and learn why these joints are used; Using Woodworking hand tools - how to safely use and know about an in-depth range of carpentry hand tools; Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery power tool- how to safely use and know about an in-depth range of carpentry power tools; Health & Safety - the essential safety that is demanded by the construction industry; Communications - how the construction industry operates and communicates, how you as a carpenter would communicate with others with in it; Functional Skills: English, Maths & IT (if you do not already hold this qualification or GCSE at grade C or above); Personal and Social Development: This separate qualification will prepare you for life outside college, helping you to find a job. You can also choose to study additional units for a broader insight into the construction industry. These include: Heritage- exploring buildings of our past; Sustainability and Modern construction methods. You will have a Personal Tutor to help you on an individual basis to maximise your potential. Students are expected to participate in field trips organised by the college.
