French - First Steps

UPDATED 20160406 11:49:18

Is this the right course for me? Yes, if you have NEVER studied French before and would now like to take the first steps. This course provides an introduction to learning the language and will suit you if you want to have lots of opportunities to practise speaking and understanding French. What will I learn? You will learn to understand, speak and read enough basic French to experience the fun and challenge of learning a new language. The vocabulary covered will be based on some of the everyday situations you might encounter on a first visit to a French speaking country e.g. meeting people and introducing yourself or ordering drinks in a cafe. How will I learn? You will learn in a group of no more than 16 people. The emphasis will be on speaking and understanding the language so expect the main language of the classroom to be French. You will be taking part in simple everyday conversations, role play and games and will be given handouts. You may have the opportunity to learn via PowerPoint and the internet. Will I gain a qualification? You will be taking your first steps on the Languages Ladder and may gain a certificate in one or more skills (optional). What can I do next? You will be ready to move on to the French - Next Steps, a 15 week course which will consolidate and extend the language you have acquired. You will be climbing the Languages Ladder and working towards completing the Breakthrough stage. What do I need to bring to the classes? Please bring a ring binder, paper and pen. At the first session the tutor will tell you about any books which you need to buy which may include an up-to-date dictionary. The course will be supported by the BBC Talk French course (www.bbc.co.uk/languages). Can I talk to someone about my course before I start it? If a member of the Community Learning MK staff cannot answer your query it is usually possible to put you directly in touch with the tutor or the Languages Advisor.
