Kiln Glass - Beginners

UPDATED 20160406 11:49:13

Is this the right course for me? The course is designed for those with an interest in kiln (warm) glass and/or beginners looking for a new creative hobby that is both rewarding and therapeutic. No previous knowledge or experience needed to join this class. However, you must be prepared to experiment as the results of kiln firing of materials can be unpredictable. What will I learn? To work safely and effectively. To cut and grind glass safely. To gain knowledge of what 'fusing compatibility glass' means and its importance in producing successful glasswork. To design, plan, prepare and make several small decorative items for kiln firing. To gain knowledge of how to prepare a kiln for firing. How will I learn? There will be demonstrations of the techniques, tooling, materials and equipment used in the design and making of fused (warm) glass items. You will develop the relevant techniques through practical exercises and the construction of several small decorative items for kiln firing. Will I gain a qualification? There is no formal qualification, but you may request a certificate of attendance from your tutor. What can I do next? There are integrated stained (cool) glass and fused (warm) glass courses available at the Community Learning MK in the design and making of 2D and 3D creative glasswork items. What do I need to bring to the classes? Glass, tools and equipment are provided for making your small decorative items for kiln firing. However a small fee will be required to cover the costs of the consumable materials and kiln firing. Please bring £12 to cover this cost which the tutor will collect on behalf of the centre. Please also bring a packed lunch. Drinks are available on site for a small charge. Can I talk to someone about my course before I start it? It is usually possible to put you directly in touch with the tutor if a member of the Community Learning MK staff cannot answer you query.
