Media Studies GCE AS

UPDATED 20160401 09:48:51

Course shortcode: MED01 A Level Media Studies is a stimulating and creative subject that helps you to develop analytical, research and practical production skills. These provide an excellent foundation for careers in media industries such as advertising, journalism, graphic design, film and television production, and marketing. Drawing on your existing personal experience, you will develop an ability to analyse, evaluate and write about the media, in particular television, film, newspapers, magazines, advertising and music. You will learn the fundamental concepts, ideas and theories informing the study of the media, including media language, the nature of representations, genre, narrative, ideologies, industry and audiences. As this course focuses on contemporary media, you will be expected to keep up-to-date with the latest news. Because the media is an ever-changing industry, there isn't any one textbook that covers this course. We aim for you to develop your own views and interpretations to explore how and why we interact with the media. You will also undertake creative production work to help you gain a greater appreciation of the media. In second year in particular, you will research and create a production informed by an awareness of contemporary media issues.
