UPDATED 20160331 09:59:21

Anyone who is interested in reading for English, Law or a Humanities based degree should consider this course. There are also socio-linguistic features of the course which support Sociology and some aspects of Psychology A level courses. Additionally, anyone who is reading for a humanities-based A level and wishes to improve their skills of analysis and evaluation for enhanced essay writing might also find this course extremely useful. The course aims to: ? introduce students to methods of language analysis to explore concepts of audience, purpose, genre, mode and representation. It also introduces students to the study of childrenïs language development, exploring how children learn language and how they are able to understand and express themselves through language. ? enable students to explore language in its wider social, geographical and temporal contexts. They will explore processes of language change. Students will also be required to study social attitudes to, and debates about, language diversity and change. ? allow students to explore and analyse language data independently and develop and reflect upon their own writing expertise.
