A LEVEL FRENCH Given the international context in which most businesses, services and organisations are operating, further study of a modern foreign language is an excellent complement to many other advanced level courses. During the course students will study topics such as: • the evolving society in France • political and artistic culture in French -speaking countries • immigration and multiculturalism • important historical events like the resistance in France during World War II. • music, film and literature from French -speaking countries Students will develop the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, critical thinking, creativity, independence and skills of analysis. • This course will appeal to students who are inquisitive about the use of language and take a pleasure in manipulating words and structures in order to communicate. • Students will build upon the skills they acquired at GCSE. • Students will be pushed to consider real issues around the world they live in, to formulate views and communicate them clearly and succinctly. • Opportunities exist for group work, independent research, making presentations and report writing. • French can be combined with many other subjects at degree level including international business management, marketing, law or another language. • Career opportunities for linguists are excellent and may include journalism, education, leisure and tourism, business and the civil service. Name: French Qualification title: GCE A level Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment Assessment is via two written examinations, including listening, reading, translation exercises and essay writing about the film or book studied. There is also a speaking examination where students will discuss a topic or issue covered during the course. Students will also give a short presentation about a research project they have carried out, followed by a discussion about their chosen topic.
