A LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE English literature involves the study of a wide range of poetry, prose and drama texts; You will explore the techniques used by writers, critical interpretations, contextual issues and personalised responses to texts. The study of English literature involves a considerable amount of independent reading and study; it requires real commitment and enthusiasm. However, the rewards are great: lively discussions, stimulating subject matter and an understanding of our literary heritage. Over the two years, you will study: • An interesting range of prose, poetry and drama from the English Renaissance to the present day. • Texts include: Hamlet, An Ideal Husband, Paradise Lost, The Road, 1984, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and A Streetcar Named Desire. At the start of year 13, you will independently research and write two pieces of coursework for your coursework portfolio. One is a 1000 word close analysis; the other is a 2000 word comparative essay. • 3 compulsory after school book clubs • Wider reading for the comparative essay • A variety of teaching and learning styles are employed including whole class discussion, small group and paired work and independent research. • You will be encouraged to build your critical vocabulary and deepen the level of your interpretation of and responses to literature. Assessment is by written examination and a coursework portfolio. Students must have a minimum GCSE grade B in English. • Well-read, articulate people will find employment in the fields of teaching, the arts, the media, law, advertising and all forms of business and industrial management.
