The upholstery is taught using traditional methods. Students should provide their own piece of furniture, bearing in mind that they must be able to carry it to and from their car (with help), as no storage is available at the school. Small items such as dining room chairs, bedroom chairs or stools are suitable for beginners. Any repairs to the frame of the piece to be upholstered need to be done prior to starting. Please consult the tutor before removing any of the upholstery, if this is the case. For those who wish to learn chair caning, a chair or stool with a flat seat is necessary for beginners, so that basic techniques can be learned before attempting more advanced work. Techniques which can be covered include cane, seagrass, Danish cord, shaker tape, real rush and paper rush. All new students are requested to contact the tutor at least two weeks before the course commences, to discuss what they wish to do during the course.
