This course will enable you to explore both the wonders and the frailties of living organisms and the environments and ecosystems they occupy. It will enable you to appreciate how society makes decisions about biology-related issues and how these decisions affect the well-being of both our economy and society as a whole. Your studies will enable you to develop practical and investigative skills and compare these to how scientists work in current research contexts. You will study the following topics in A level biology Topic 1: Lifestyle, health and risk Topic 2: Genes and health Topic 3: Voice of the genome Topic 4: Biodiversity and natural resources Topic 5: On the wild side Topic 6: Immunity, infection and forensics Topic 7: Run for your life Topic 8: Grey matter A full range of teaching strategies are used to engage your interest and enthusiasm for the biological world. Through independent learning, group work, discussion and practical activities you will develop a range of scientific skills and a thorough understanding of biological concepts. We utilise a wide range of paper based and ICT resources and there is also a range of online activities specifically designed to support this course, which can be accessed independently. Biology A level is excellent preparation for studying a range of degree programmes including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacology, physiology, ecology and environmental science. A level biology students learn and develop skills that allow them to communicate, analyse, criticise, argue and discuss. They are numerate and literate and are able to present data and information in a variety of different ways. These are invaluable skills for further study of any degree discipline and for all lines of work.
