Classical Civilisation AS Level

UPDATED 20160322 09:28:58

If you are interested in Greek history and culture you should consider this course. Greek ideas, flowering through contact with the East and North Africa, have played a major part in shaping Europe and the West. This course enhances understanding of the arts, English literature, history and social sciences. You will develop the ability to analyse literature and art and assess the importance of events and personalities by studying sources. Classical civilisations will help you develop an appreciation of ancient art, sculpture and literature. It will also teach you to organise and evaluate arguments and to write a clearly structured essay. You will learn a lot about culture, history and society in Ancient Greece, and be able to relate this to what you know of the modern world. In year 12 you will learn one unit about classical sculpture and architecture and another unit on Homer's Odyssey. No previous knowledge of these two areas is required and the course is taught with an assumption that the majority of the class will not have studied the classical world before. You will also learn to appreciate the classical influences that can be seen all over the western world and especially within Bristol itself. Additionally there is an opportunity to study Latin GCSE over 2 years. You will be learning in a variety of different ways. We will be reading pieces of text and looking at images, working individually, or in groups or pairs, using the library and computer room for research, reading aloud, using drama, making small presentations to the class, having class debates and practicing essay and exam technique. Visits will be arranged as opportunities arise. In the past the department has visited Greece, Rome and London as well as local venues to attend student conferences.
