Why should I follow this course? This course provides an integrated study of both English language and English literature allowing progression from GCSE and developing a wide range of skills. The study of English language and literature together allows you to develop your interest in both as interconnecting and mutually supportive disciplines. The course encourages you to develop into an independent, confident and reflective reader. You will have a wide range of reading opportunities to allow you to explore the relationship of language and literature and you will also learn more about writing for a variety of audiences and purposes. What will I learn? AS level Views and voices (50%) People and places (50%) A2 level Telling stories (40%) Exploring conflict (40%) Making connections (20%) What teaching and learning methods will be used? Teaching methods will vary according to the activity and type of text you are studying. There will be whole group discussions, small group work, individual research projects and tutorials as well as whole class teaching. Students will have the opportunity to take part in an annual writing course in Devon and to attend enrichments opportunities. What can I do when I have my qualification? English language and literature is a highly regarded A level because it suggests that you can communicate clearly and have an understanding of the importance and power of language alongside an appreciation of a variety of literary genres and critical approaches to texts. You will also develop strong analytical skills. This A level is recognised and valued by higher education institutions and by employers in areas such as journalism, law, retailing, banking, marketing, advertising, publishing and industry.
