Psychology is a very exciting field of study. It attempts to gain knowledge of how the mind works through the study of behaviour and, increasingly, the functioning of the brain. Psychology pushes us towards greater self-knowledge by making us more aware of our actions and personalities. There are the physiologists, child psychologists, industrial specialists, sports, cognitive and social psychologists – and that’s just the tip of a very large iceberg! Psychology is an appropriate course for anyone with an interest in understanding human behaviour. Psychologists study things you’ve probably never considered. They investigate the newly discovered phenomenon of something called mirror neurons, the question of which visual cues activate what areas of the brain, which is the stage of sleep in which we dream and so on. You need skills associated with a scientific approach, such as those of research, numeracy, analysis and problem solving and information technology. You will also need to have excellent skills of written and oral communication, interpersonal and team skills and the power to learn independently. It is a very demanding course that involves a lot of reading, writing and the need to get your head around a lot of very difficult ideas, concepts, theories and research. A new feature of the course is that overall, at least 10% of the marks in assessments for Psychology will require the use of mathematical skills.
