(This course is a development of Resistant Materials studied in years 10 and 11 (KS4) but is open to other Technology subjects and both Science and Maths on meeting the entry requirements. Pupils will gain a knowledge and understanding of materials from the industrial and designer's perspective. Pupils will have the opportunity to design and make products using a variety of materials. The aim of the course is to introduce the student to a selection of processess, materials and the skills to work with them, The course requires commitment and enthusiasm for the subject and very good English as there is a large written component. AS students undertake two units. Unit 1: Theory examination on materials, components and application. Students should develop and understanding of a broad range of materials with emphasis on the life cycle of products, manufacture and final disposal. Unit2: Coursework Learning though designing and making. Coursework may take a number of forms; a single design and make project, two smaller projects and/or a portfoli of work. A level students undertake two further units. Unit 3: Theory Examination on design and manufacture. In this final exam pupils are questioned on their knowledge of materials and components, design and market influences and processes and manufacture. Unit 4: Coursework Design and making practice. Candidates submit evidence of a single substantial design and make activity.)
