English Literature

UPDATED 20160321 13:00:55

(In English Literature students learn to approach the study of literature through the lens of historicism, encouraging the independent study of a range of texts within a shared context. This unifying approach facilitates the inclusion of a range of wider reading, thus extending students' experience and appreciation of literature. English Literature privileges the process of making autonomous meaning, encouraging students to debate and challenge the interpretations of other readers as they develop their own informed personal responses. In Love through the ages, the theme of love, one of the most central themes in literature, is explored across time. In their AS year students will prepare for two papers. In Paper 1- Shakespeare and Poetry, they will study 'Othello' and an anthology of pre-1900 love poetry. In Paper 2 they will read 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' and 'The Great Gatsby' as well as prepare for the unseen extract analysis. In A2, in addition to revising the texts from AS, they will prepare for their paper 'Texts in shared contexts: WW1'. They will also complete their 'independent critical study: texts across time' which is based on two texts of their choice. The learning opportunity is both academic and practical. English Literature naturally leads to careers and higher education in education, journalism, law and public relations. The variety of assessment styles used, such as passage-based questions, unseen material, single-text questions, multiple-text questions, open- and closed-book approaches allows students to develop a wide range of skills, such as the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research which are valuable for both further study and future employment. English Literature therefore complements any subject and is a highly regarded by universities and employers.)
