The English Language A Level will appeal to students with an interest in analysing and evaluating transactional writing skills and speech. It will allow students to develop a deeper understanding of the English language and builds heavily on their study of spoken language at GCSE. A2 Level Component 1: Language Variation - Students will explore how language varies depending on a variety of factors and how identity is created. The unit also gives students a historical context for the development of language from the middle of the 16th Century. This will be assessed with an examination worth 35% of the A Level. Component 2: Child Language - Students will study language acquisition and how students learn to write, using theories of development to analyse and evaluate. This will be assess with an examination worth 20% of the A Level. Component 3: Language Investigation - This unit encourages research and specialism in a focused area personalised to each student. This will be assessed by an examination worth 25% of the A Level. Coursework: Crafting Language - Students will research a selected genre, create an appropriate text for the genre and audience and then evaluate their creation in an essay. This is worth 20% of the final qualification and must total no more than 3000 words.
