Media Studies offers students the opportunity to consider the theories, debates and practices that underpin this powerful industry and to consider their own roles as consumers and producers in today's society. Students study a range of media texts and topics, as well as the construction and deconstruction of media products, considering the key areas of Media Forms and Conventions, Media Institutions, Media Audiences and Media Representations. Production work is an important component. Candidates learn to relate theory and practice, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of technical skills in their own media production and engaging in creative and imaginative work. Students will specialise in moving image production in Year 12, creating the opening of a feature film, and studying representation, distribution, funding and exhibition in media industries today. In Year 13 students are able to continue with a moving image specialism or diversify to develop skills and knowledge in other production areas, such as print. Media Studies is highly compatible with most subjects in the post-16 curriculum. The course will be of interest to all students, whether they are specialists in the humanities or sciences.
