Mathematics

If you enjoy the challenge of solving difficult problems then this course is for you! A-level mathematics provides students with a thorough grounding in the mathematical tools and techniques often needed in the workplace. The logic and reasoning skills developed by studying A-level maths make sure the qualification is widely respected even in non-mathematical arenas. There is increased focus on mathematics for post- 16 students, so both AS and A Level mathematics would be a valuable qualification for any sixth form student. What will the lessons be like? At AS Level you will study three units which are separated into pure and applied mathematics. C1 and C2 are concerned with the pure side of mathematics and they extend work covered at GCSE, introducing and developing mathematical ideas such as calculus and numerical methods. S1 deals with the applied side of mathematics and extends material covered at GCSE on data handling and probability as well as introducing theoretical distributions which model real life situations. M1 deals with the kinematic, dynamics and static of particles which includes velocity, speed and momentum. A2 Level will include C3 and C4 with the third unit depending on options between statistics and mechanics. How is it assessed? AS Level assessment is by means of examinations in all three units. These are C1, C2 and S1 or C1, C2 and M1. C1 is the only non-calculator paper. A2 Level assessment is also by means of examinations in C3 and C4 and the optional unit. How can I go onto study further and what sort of jobs can it lead to? As well as a degree in its own right, maths is one of the main 'facilitating' subjects, highly regarded by employers. Many careers such as accountancy, medicine, statistics, and engineering, architecture and management services may require qualifications in mathematics.
