The course consists of 3 components: Component 1: Judaism (Holocaust theology, festivals, family life, challenges of being a minority, challenge of science and secularisation). Component 2: Philosophy (The rise of militant atheism. The problem of evil and suffering. Challenges to belief in miracles and near death experiences. Religious experiences such as visions, mysticism and prayer). Component 3: Ethics (Sexual, environmental, medical and business ethics. Ethical theories such as Natural Law and utilitarianism. The use of technology versus the protection of human rights. The ethics of war and criminology). How is it assessed? Awarding Body: WJEC/ Eduqas All components are assessed with equal weighting by an examination (Duration: 2 hours) Every year many students choose to continue studying this subject at A Level at Walton Academy Post 16 Centre. 100% of A Level students achieve A*-D in this subject every year. 67% of the current Year 13 students achieved grades A*-B in their AS examinations. 100% of these Year 13 students are working on or above their target grade (67% exceeded their target in the AS examinations). Several students have enjoyed the course so much that they have gone on to study it at degree level, one student having her theology dissertation published. How can I go onto study further and what sort of jobs can it lead to? The course is fascinating and excellent preparation for a wide range of careers. Highly regarded by universities, the subject involves a study of philosophical, theological and ethical theories which underpin and structure our world today. An understanding of these ideas is essential to an engagement with key themes in politics, criminology, law, medicine, education, human rights and religion.
