Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour and is a valuable science to support any job where you are working with other people. An aspect of psychology forms part of many university courses. Most students find the study of human behaviour fascinating and the course includes opportunities for practical psychological investigations. In Year One there are four topics: Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Biological Psychology and Learning Theories. In Year Two, you will study Clinical Psychology and a second topic from a choice of Criminological Psychology, Child psychology and Health Psychology. You will also study research methods in further detail and learn about psychological approaches and debates. What will the lessons be like? A variety of different teaching and learning methods are used including research and presentation, role play and teacher led activities. Students must be prepared to follow up the classes with independent research from recommended web sites and textbooks in the LRC. The course is structured around an excellent supporting text book approved by the examination board. Year 12 (AS Level / A Level Year One) Social and Cognitive Psychology Biological Psychology and Learning Theories Year 13 (A Level Year Two) Clinical Psychology and topic of choice Research methods, approaches and debates How is it assessed? Assessment will be based on two written examinations for AS and three written examinations for the full A-Level (comprising of Year One and Year Two topics). There will be no assessed course work. How can I go onto study further and what sort of jobs can it lead to? A Level Psychology is widely accepted by universities and as well as a degree subject in its own right, psychology provides a pathway into most subject areas. Possible careers include clinical psychologist, forensic psychologist, educational psychologist and sports psychologist.
