The topics chosen for study may be undertaken in isolation or in conjunction with mutually supporting components. The A and A/S Level music courses may be seen as continuations of the G.C.S.E. music course. In essence they, like the G.C.S.E. course, consist of the three main areas of listening, performing and composing. A-Level music is a two year course and is separate from the A/S Level. It is based on three components APPRAISING PERFORMING COMPOSING COMPONENT 1: APPRAISING MUSIC This component accounts for 40% of marks at A/S Level and takes the form of an exam paper with listening and written questions responding to excerpts of music. The paper is based on several prescribed Areas of Study covering a range of musical styles that may include elements of Jazz, popular music, the classical tradition, music for the theatre, piano music and music for media (film, TV and gaming). You will be assessed on your listening and analytical skills and the paper is divided into three sections: Section A: Listening (56 marks) Section B: Analysis (34 marks) Section C: Essay (30 marks) COMPONENT 2: PERFORMING Solo and/or ensemble performing as an instrumentalist or vocalist. This component is 35% of A-level marks (50 marks). A minimum of ten minutes of performance in total is required.
